Plastic from eggshells: saving on waste disposal costs and respecting the environment

Eggshells discarded by the food industry used to make plastic for packaging and much more.

eggshell-plastic-industry-packagingRecycling eggshells, both from the food industry and from our own domestic waste and converting them into plastic for packaging, medical devices and building materials. This is what’s happening in Great Britain with Food and Drink iNet working on a project to recycle the proteins available in eggshells, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs); an ingredient which is already in use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries (e.g. hyaluronic acid) for the formulation of bio-plastic.

Eggshells are made of a sophisticated biological composite material that has a great potential as it can be combined with different biodegradable plastics and polymers for all sorts of applications, from packaging for the food industry to any product containing plastic.

Companies interested in reducing eggshell disposal costs by using a method with low environmental impact will have the chance to take part to the initiative’s future developments.
